Troy's Tuesday Tie Trivia # 4

Welcome to Troy’s Tuesday Tie Trivia. This feature was inspired by an incredible deal I got on ties at a local indoor flea market.

You can read all about it here.

Last week, I featured my new Valentines Day Tie.

This weeks' tie is one of my "old" ties. Although it doesn't say Valentines on it, it was my previous Valentines Day Tie. Diann bought it for me at a thrift store a few years ago, and I have worn it once a year since then.

It doesn't have any information on it, so the designer, and even the manufacturer are unknown. It simply says "Made in Korea."

Just a tip for guys. It has been my experience that wearing a tie that says "Hug Me" on it does not automatically result in the wearer receiving any more hugs than would have otherwise been received.

Last week, I talked about some trivia related to the economic side of Valentines Day
This week, I want to approach Valentines Day Trivia from a slightly different angle.
.

There are a lot of different versions of the origin of Valentines Day, but most of them connect in one way or another to St. Valentine, who was martyred February 14, 269 AD.
Some stories say that he was in love with his jailers' daughter, while others state that he performed marriages, in direct defiance of the decree of Claudius, Emporer of Rome.
(It seemed that Claudius was having trouble getting young men to enlist in the army, as they didn't want to leave their wives behind, so to solve that problem, he made marriage illegal.)

The red rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. The color red stands for strong romantic feelings making the red rose the flower of love.

A single perfect red rose framed with baby's breath is named by some florists as a "signature rose," and is the preferred choice for most for giving on Valentine's Day.

In Wales wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on February 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favourite decorations on the spoons. The decoration meant, "You unlock my heart!"

Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire.

I'm not sure what kind of bird Diann would have had to see to end up with me, probably a dodo bird, with muddy tailfeathers and most likely a broken wing...

But whatever bird it was, I'm glad it was there that day.

Happy Valentines Day. And may the bird of paradise fly over each of us.

  1. I am so impressed that a guy would put together this post .. especially the pictures ... now be honest .. did your wife help with the design layout? Not that you're not capable of such a thing ... but it has a definite girly touch ;)

    Thanks for sharing.

  2. I have to answer Mrs Mac's comment publicly. I set the vignette up myself. Diann took the pictures, because she is better with the camera than I am. I took some, but I wasn't happy with the way the looked so she took over. She has a steadier hand with the camera.
She 'primped' it a bit, switched out my white plate in a few of the pictures for a silver tray, changed to a different candlestick, fluffed the tie.

That being said, I guess looking 'Girly' makes sense. I wanted it to look 'romantic' and so I tried to think of all the things I would include if I were creating a 'romantic' tray for my wife, and although she can be tough when she needs to, she is very Girly!

I always figured Valentine's Day is the one day a year when men are supposed to set aside their "Macho Manly Man" image, and try to understand that whole candlelight and roses thing. (Their wife's birthday is also a good time.)

I promise, next week's tie will be more Manly!
