Tuesday Trivia Tie-in #6 ALSAC

Welcome to Tuesday Trivia Tie-in. Each Tuesday readers are invited to share a blog post about one of their collection and a bit of related trivia.

This feature was inspired by a great deal I got on an entire rack of ties at an indoor flea market. Added to the ties I already had, I realized I had quite a collection of neat ties.

This week I will also be joining:
Color Carnival
Because this is one of the most colorful ties I own, and
2nd Time Around
at A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words
Because, like so many of my ties, this one came from a thrift store.

Also, just for kicks, I'm going to join a party I have never joined before:
Toot Your Horn Tuesday
at A Silly Little Sparrow
For no other reason than that I am proud of my ties and want to show them off, especially a cool one like this!

Earlier in the week, I wrote about the St Jude Children's Research Hospital, in Memphis Tennessee. You can read that post here. This is an incredible hospital, that does remarkable work. But, as we all know, even with the new health care reform bill, health care isn't cheap.

It costs about $1.5 million per day (yes, I said per day) to run this hospital.

Danny Thomas knew when he founded the hospital, that it would be expensive. So he turned to his fellow Americans of Arabic-speaking heritage. Believing deeply that these Americans should, as a group, thank the United States for the gifts of freedom given their parents, Danny also felt the support of St. Jude would be a noble way of honoring his immigrant forefathers who had come to America.

His request struck a responsive chord. In 1957, 100 representatives of the Arab-American community met in Chicago to form ALSAC® (American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities) with a sole purpose of raising funds for the support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The current CEO of ALSAC is Richard Shadyac shown in this picture, standing next to a portrait of his father, Richard C. Shadyac Sr., who was the CEO for 13 years.

Where am I going with this, you may ask? Well, look closely at the tie worn in the portrait on the wall.

Need a closer look?

What about it you ask?

Well, that tie was designed by Richard C. Shadyac Sr. And was sold, along with many other items, and was used as part of the fundraising effort.

Still can't see it very well? How's this?

Diann found this tie for me recently and I thought it was cool even before I knew the story.

It was one of Mr Shadyacs favorite ties, and therefore the one he chose to wear for his official portrait.

From what I have been able to identify, it features the flags of The USA, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, Lebanon, Australia, Guyana, and Senagal, as well as one flag that I cannot identify at all.

If anyone knows what country is represented by a vertical tribar flag of Green, White and Yellow, please let me know.

So, that is my cool tie of the week. A bright colorful tie, with a colorful story behind it.

  2. I like the story you told of St. Jude's. I just saw a pray request on a blog that I do Spiritual Sunday with and then a post that said the little girl passed away from neuroblastoma. It is supposedly a very rare cancer but I hear about more and more kids with it. St. Jude's is the leader on treating this cancer. Thanks for the nice post!

  7. You have no idea how completely amazed and HONORED I am to see this blog...you see, I am the actual graphic designer who created this tie!! My name is Lawanda (McClellan) Baker and I worked at ALSAC many years ago (back in 1996) with Mr. Shadyac to create the ties. He wanted something unique to represent St. Jude...he said he wanted a tie and asked me to come up with some ideas...this was the first and the original...many others were spawned from this idea. And yes he did love it....lol ...we used to see him any given day of the week wearing it! The tie became an sensation bigger than any of us could imagine...I had no idea anyone even thought of it any more! It was also a major direct marketing tool...because the tag on the very back of it has the 800 number to make a donation to ALSAC - the fundraising arm for the hospital itself. OH and to answer your question about the un identified flag...it is supposed to be the flag for Ireland...the yellow was suppose to print more of an orange color that some how did not translate int he printing process LOL... I had hoped not one would notice! HA!! Anyway... I am so glad that you enjoy the tie, and I hope that it is still generating revenue for St. Jude...God Bless :))

    1. Hi Lawanda,

I am extremely honored that you found my blog.

I apologize for my late response, your comment found its way into my spam filter, and I just noticed it sitting there patiently waiting for me to rescue it.

Thank you so much for visiting my blog, for your comment here, and providing additional information on the amazing tie that you designed.

      Troy
