What a bargain!

OK, I missed another week, The summer vacation season is in full swing, and we took advantage of our current employment status to enjoy some time away from home with family and friends.

But I didn't forsake the world of herbs.

One day last week, while driving around the area outside our campground, we noticed a small nursery with a sign that read "Free herbs with any purchase", so of course I had to stop and see what that was all about.

I told the nice lady that I had seen the sign and wondered what herbs they had. She pointed me to an entire section of the nursery.

Their herbs were all labeled $1.30 each or 5/$5. Not a bad price for herbs this late in the season, so I thought I could take advantage of an opportunity to expand the perennials we grow.

I picked out six herbs, not sure if I would get one free with each paid herb, costing me $3.90. or if I would pay $5 for five and get one free. Either way, there were six that I was interested in.

I got Russian Tarragon, Lemon Balm, Chamomile, Purple Sage, Pineapple sage and Savory.

The savory that I have been growing, was labeled winter savory when I bought it, and has survived for several years. But this savory was also labeled winter savory, and is a stronger, stockier plant, with broader leaves, so now I'm a bit confused.

That's OK, confusion is good for the soul, or at least I think that's how it goes.

Anyway, When I got to the register with my six herbs, the lady charged me for one, and gave me the others free with my purchase, s I ended up paying only $1.30 and getting six beautiful healthy perennials that I hope will all add to our garden.

I haven't planted any of them in the garden yet, so if anyone has any tips or suggestions, feel free to offer them.

I do think I will plant the chamomile in the flower bed rather than with the other herbs, as I have heard it can be a bit aggressive, and if we are going to have a ground cover going crazy, I'd prefer it to be with our flowers. I also intend to plant the Lemon Balm in a container, as I have heard that, like mint, it can be an aggressive plant if not controlled.

But at $1.30 for six, or less that 22 cents a plant, I figured I got one heck of a deal.

I'm looking forward to adding these to our garden, and seeing what they "bring to the table".

I missed last week and I will be late with my "All About Herbs" article this week. But I plan to get this weeks article up on Saturday.

Until then, Now may be a good time to check the local nurseries, they seem to all be having their "end of the season" clearance sales, and now may be a good time to get those perennials that you missed in the spring.
